Campaigning in Throckley

Residents in Newburn, Throckley and Walbottle are being invited to share their views on Council Tax and local services following this year’s 5.2% increase.

The rise was approved by Labour councillors earlier this year. At the same meeting, councillors also voted to increase their own allowances by 3.2%.

The decision has prompted criticism from local campaigners, who argue that households are facing higher bills while public services are under strain. Concerns raised include street cleanliness, road maintenance and reductions in local services.

Alexis, Simon and Harry — have announced that they are standing to campaign on the issue.

Alexis, a teacher who has worked in Newcastle for many years, including in Walbottle, said she wants to see better value for money for residents.

Simon, a retired jockey with an interest in economics, said he believes recent financial decisions have negatively impacted local services and the wider economy.

Harry, a lifelong Newburn resident, said he has seen changes in the area over recent years and wants to help improve local standards.

The group say their priorities include cleaner streets, properly maintained roads and ensuring better value for taxpayers.

A short survey has been launched to gather residents’ views on Council Tax levels and the quality of local services. Households are encouraged to complete and return the questionnaire using the Freepost envelope provided, or submit their responses online.
